What CDL Drivers Should Expect During a Drug Test

April 12, 2026healthquestexamsCDL Driver Resources

The process is simple but strict.

Here’s how it works:

  1. You check in with ID
  2. Provide a urine sample
  3. Sample is sealed and sent to a lab
  4. Results are reviewed and reported

The entire process usually takes:

👉 15–30 minutes at the clinic

How Long Results Take

For drivers in Dallas–Fort Worth trying to get back to work quickly:

  • Negative results: usually 1–2 business days
  • Non-negative results: may take longer for review

DOT Drug Test vs DOT Physical (Important Difference)

A lot of drivers confuse these two.

👉 They are NOT the same

DOT Physical

  • checks your health
  • required for your medical card

DOT Drug Test

  • checks for controlled substances
  • required for employment compliance

Many CDL drivers in Arlington and Dallas end up needing both around the same time.
